Paul M. Parizel is the inaugural David Hartley Chair of Radiology at The University of Western Australia (UWA) and Royal Perth Hospital (RPH). From 2019 he works as a ‘clinical academic’ with an appointment as Full Professor (Level E) at the UWA Medical School and a clinical appointment at the RPH Dept of Radiology. He also serves as the Node Director of the Western Australia National Imaging Facility (NIF), an advanced research platform encompassing pre-clinical translational imaging research and human imaging involving clinical trials.
Paul is an accomplished academic neuroradiologist with extensive experience in leading top-tier professional environments and scientific societies. Prior to his arrival in Australia, he served as Chair of the Department of Radiology at Antwerp University Hospital (2003-2019), and tenured full Professor of Radiology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Antwerp (Belgium). As President of the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), he actively pursued international participation, operational excellence, and program innovation, which brought a record 28,000 delegates to Vienna for the ECR 2017 meeting. His management experience has resulted in invitations to serve on the medical advisory boards of several start-up companies. Paul has always strived to combined patient-centric clinical excellence with research.
Publications and Grants: Prof Parizel is an active researcher in (neuro)radiology and medical imaging. He is author or co-author of > 500 peer-reviewed scientific papers (PubMed-listed) and >40 book chapters. His h-index is 79 (Google Scholar), 60 (Web of Science), or 63 (Scopus). His recent work was published in Lancet Neurol, N Engl J Med, J Neurology, J Neurotrauma, JMRI, Neuroradiology, AJNR, Investigative Radiology, Insights into Imaging, and many others. He is editor and co-editor of several books, including “Clinical MR Imaging, a practical approach” and “Spinal Imaging”. He is an editor for the Springer Book series “Diagnostic Imaging”, with over 50 titles published. Throughout his career, his has received many millions grant support in Belgian Francs, Euros, Australian Dollars (listed in the full C.V.).
Leadership and peer recognition: Prof Parizel was elected President (2016-2017) and subsequently Chair of the Board of Directors (2017-2018) of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), which is the largest radiological society in the world with >140,000 members. Previously, he also served as President of the Royal Belgian Radiological Society (RBRS, 1999-2000) and President of the European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR, 2010-2012). He is an Honorary Member of the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR, 2017), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA, 2018), and of the national (neuro)radiological societies of Australia/New Zealand (RANZCR, 2002), Russian Federation, Serbia, Romania, Spain, France, Israel, Algeria, Italy, Cuba, Peru, and Brazil. He received the prestigious “Schinz Medal” from the Swiss Society of Radiology (SSR, 2018) and was awarded the Gold Medal of the European Society of Radiology (ESR, 2021) in recognition of ‘outstanding, internationally recognised achievements and leadership in the areas of neuroradiology and artificial intelligence’. He is a member-at-large of the Executive Committee of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies (WFNRS, 2022-2026). Paul is a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium.
Mentoring and teaching: During his 16-year tenure as Professor and Chair of Radiology at the University of Antwerp, he supervised the training of radiology residents and fellows. His interest in imaging research has led him to effectively supervise 17 PhD candidates at the University of Antwerp towards successful completion of their degree. He currently supervises 2 PhD candidates at the University of Western Australia (UWA). He enjoys teaching medical students as part of the UWA Medical School curriculum in medical imaging and in the Western Australia Radiology Teaching Program at Royal Perth Hospital.
Speaker, Conferences and Courses: He is a sought-after speaker and has delivered more than 500 invited and plenary lectures at international meetings and courses.
Languages spoken: For Paul, English is his third language. He is also fluent in Dutch, French, German, with a working knowledge of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
